Sounds too general to be true, doesn’t it? We’re serious, though. These 4 steps to better business can really put you on the right track towards working smarter, not harder.

  1. Don’t try to eat the whole elephant at once.

    Like with any goal, better business just takes a little planning. Make a list, and break it down into manageable pieces. Knowing how long each task will take helps get a schedule together that you can actually accomplish. For example, one day’s focus may be to update some client-facing documents. The next day, spend a little time tidying up and reorganizing your asset folders. Whatever you do, just keep moving forward!

  2. Better business requires flexibility.

    Sometimes things that work on paper don’t go over so well in real life. Monitor your changes and ideas, and get feedback from the people involved and your peers. If you find that your new method or workflow just isn’t working out, make tweaks. It’s ok to revisit your initial plan and decide it needs changes. It’s much better than sticking with something that is not working, spending time and resources fueling an inefficient venture.

  3. Create a work sanctuary.

    When you think of your workspace, what’s the raw emotion that hits you right away? If it’s negative, or even neutral, you’ve got some changes to make. Your work area should be a place that you feel confident, creative, capable, and connected. Get it there by improving the layout, equipment, ambiance, or whatever feels “off.” Also – organization is absolutely crucial to doing better business. Good office organization can mean a more efficient routine, and a more efficient routine means more time for the important stuff. Here’s some practical tips on how to make your workspace a place you love to be.

  4. Reach out.

    Everybody needs help. Yes, you too. It’s important to know when to reach out. Don’t wait until a situation is desperate, or until you’re backed into a corner. Get your questions and comments gathered up, then go to your team members, or people in your support group. Staying organized with what you’re asking of everyone is a good idea, and you’ll be more likely to get the help you need. Don’t just reach out within your company – reach out to your clients as well. Involve them in the process of getting their projects done, and everyone will be more satisfied with the end result.
