Social Media 2019 Update

social media 2019

As we close out an eventful 2018, it’s a good time to take a look at where social media has taken us, and what we should expect in the year to come. One thing is for certain: It’s an exciting time to work in social media and digital marketing in general. We’ve done our research to provide you with this actionable report on the state of social media in 2019.

Action items for 2019 Social Media Marketing:

Build Trust

Building trust is important in any relationship. It’s arguably the number one priority for successful social marketing in 2019.

Social media is the source of a LOT of deception and misinformation, and the public is fed up. Social users have grown accustomed to seeing unreliable information across their feeds. In 2018, Twitter faced off against bot armies, Zuckerberg testified like a complete robot, and fake news became a plague. The result is that only 41% of users trust social media. Let’s turn that around by putting out trustworthy, accurate, individualized content that’s focused on our followers. As social marketers, we can build or reinforce trust by providing relevant, helpful information on our social feeds, and stop trying to sell ourselves so much.

Tell Stories

Telling stories well on social works because that’s what it was made for to begin with! Social media is at its best when we can successfully share experiences and information.

The Story product appearing now across most platforms is one way to allow your followers to jump into your brand’s journey. It’s an off-the-cuff way to update people, and it’s easier to do than other content. In fact, less polished Stories typically perform better than heavily-edited versions. That’s good news for those who are short on time. The Stories format lets you get your point across in a jiffy while keeping people engaged.

The takeaway: Start putting out more genuine, follower-focused content. And if you don’t have a strategy for Stories, now is the time.
