Great web design is a key ingredient for customer acquisition and retention, but we know the web design process can seem daunting. If you’re thinking about having a website designed, you might be worried about a long, arduous, and expensive journey ahead. It really doesn’t have to be like that. Here’s what our web design process looks like, step by step.
There are 6 simple steps to our responsive web design process:
Jump to a step:
Step 1: Gather information & set up a plan
The first step to our web design process is basic discovery. We need some details in order to set up the project in the best way possible.
Here’s the minimum info that most web designers will need to begin:
- Do you own any domains? If so, where are they registered and hosted? If not, do you have a preferred URL that we’ll need to secure?
- What’s your target launch date?
- Who will need access and training?
- Do you have content ready or an outline to follow?
- Do you have a library of images to use? Will we need to source photos or do photography? If so, what style?
- Are you selling anything on the site? Will you need e-commerce capabilities right off the bat?
- Are there any other functions you would like integrated? (Common requests are: submit applications, apply for subscriptions or sign up for memberships, talk with an automated chat bot, have a Q&A section, connect forms to a CRM like Hubspot, social media integration, music and audio players)
We’ll put together a timeline with milestone due dates so everyone is in the loop and knows what to expect.
Step 2: Review ideas & inspiration
Here’s where we’ll get to collaborate on the design and aesthetic of your site. We’ll discuss inspiration sites – what we like and don’t like – and figure out the visual direction we need to take. Bring your ideas and we’ll bring the design expertise!
Step 3: Review sitemap & content
A sitemap is part of any new website creation process or website redesign process. Setting up and approving a sitemap will let us know the pages to build, and the content to include on each page.
For those who like a little more control of the creative process, you might want to approve wireframes as well. Wireframes are like blueprints that show the design and layout of the pages in the sitemap.
We’ll also help gather, create, or prepare the content for your website. We can take this task off your shoulders completely or simply guide you as you create your own.
Step 4: Build out the staging site
Now for the heavy lifting (for us, not you – you can relax). Our designers get to work creating the website of your dreams! The site will live on a secret URL that you can access anytime you want to have a peek at the progress. We’ll have you look at drafts to provide input along the way.
Step 5: Test and launch
Our teams will go through the site with a fine-tooth comb, looking for anything “off.” We’ll double check the site on lots of different devices to make sure everything looks great. Then, it’s launch time! We’ll even make a few graphics for you to share the good news on social media.
Step 6: Post-launch support
We don’t disappear when the site is launched (unless you want us to, of course). We stick around to provide post-launch support and make sure you take control of your new site with confidence.
You’ll be shown how to access your site’s dashboard. We’ll also train you how to do basic tasks like editing text on pages, adding posts, or whatever else you’d like to know. Then, we’ll check in periodically afterwards to answer any follow-up questions and lend a helping hand.
And that’s all, folks!
So now the website is complete, hooray! Everything looks gorgeous and has been tested thoroughly. You know how to work on the site yourself, and you have help standing by if you ever need it. And, you didn’t have to pay a fortune. Sounds great, doesn’t it?
